New IET Proceedings: Renewable Energy

In march 2007, the IET introduced a new proceedings title to its list of journals. This is an abtract from the editorial:

This new IET journal could not be more timely with interest
* E8 J6 ~9 n+ o7 X/ y4 Z% zin renewable power generation at an all time high. In recent0 q9 \* X9 }. G! q3 M+ L1 [' ^3 m
weeks the European Union has announced a significant
1 X0 T7 ^2 X9 E( \  R1 [increase in planned renewable energy capacity driven by5 [! v3 j! r) U
agreed and binding commitments to CO2 emissions
, R8 O% a! B% n2 y6 s- m2 Preduction, and other major economic areas including
. w% [& S, r% b2 N: e1 Q9 M/ i& QChina and India have recently announced similarly5 \* ?. g- d  C
ambitious plans. In North America, the need for sustainable% D- [$ }  |6 z+ R/ z2 B/ x, X/ @
and clean energy is also being increasingly recognised./ d4 v9 P/ |; K+ k1 Q
I was approached by the IET late in 2006 to plan this
: x# S8 X% D% y5 E* Q- O! \* [6 \exciting new journal, so you will appreciate that we have
4 Y) l0 ~, O5 Y. Bmoved very quickly to publish this first issue. I’m* D6 z# P! B0 i& k* g& r5 T
extremely grateful to all the authors and referees that have5 n, Y- m  U* |- i
helped in this, and also I’d like to record my appreciation
. f5 p) E, N7 R4 ~  L; xto the IET team: Stuart Govan; Lee Baldwin and
3 ^: g" [& U- b3 g$ B( T% f# |Charlotte Hammond, for their support and for cajoling me

Of course there are many excellent journals out there
7 I: S5 l/ j& h! X0 y4 jcovering renewable energy, in the main focussed on specific# a5 `, e4 M+ A8 h/ ?8 I
technologies; good examples are Wind Energy, Progress in/ a. p6 x! `. O9 `
Photovoltaics, and Solar Cells and Materials, and Solar
" ?4 f/ _1 g+ bEnergy has been in print now for over 30 years. However,
8 N! s7 q: }% k3 U1 ~" Fwe felt there was a real need for a high quality, genuinely. g* ~* j0 l* b3 z
international journal, that covered the issues that arise- Z7 G$ R' D; B6 i6 c: o2 c
when renewable energy generation sources are used, and" r" Z7 O+ t2 a% O% D
almost invariably this means that they are connected to# o" p1 b# ?$ A3 O
electricity systems. As the proportion of electricity
  Z/ S' p  C; Kgenerated from renewable sources increases, so the
$ I& r! u! M6 B0 X: uchallenges of providing a sustainable, safe, reliable and
6 q3 K( V. k; ]  c  |cost effective power system operation become apparent.; M+ t3 W0 E) O- o( x
Considerable current research is aimed at these, in the$ k  ?, [! ?3 a6 b
main, technical challenges – much of this is unashamedly+ `+ c' {8 _8 c  a+ @/ F8 a
multi-disciplinary. I hope that IET Renewable Power8 i( [4 N8 G( X
Generation (IET RPG) can capture the best of this research; C7 j) Z0 h9 \% `' j
and disseminate it to the increasingly numerous and active
: Y: e+ G4 g& F6 j/ r: h; m6 c1 f3 wcommunity of engineers and scientists both researching
; Q; U; J& `& z# x7 othe problems and implementing the new knowledge and
3 [- Y5 [: h& J5 Q8 ~- q0 x# n  lunderstanding in a commercial context.0 Y. w/ J- }9 s. X, n, j* r0 A1 F
I see IET RPG as something that I hope will be valued by
! e- ]/ ?8 d8 [8 b9 [. z. F  @the renewable energy community and electricity supply- s2 f/ Y! Q* |6 O, @
industry together, and provide an important bridge
) @0 p+ B+ n7 f2 Pbetween these two communities. All those involved% F6 y/ Q) u$ P
have a role to play in ensuring the quality of this journal,  i  Y- l  B: d( K% {5 [
and through this its success and influence on an increasingly' l$ y' W) {# K% E2 a9 Y
important sector of the economy and one key to a  o1 ]' E0 U0 r: P) q% A5 Z; X; s
sustainable and environmentally sound future.+ r% j/ w5 j9 b3 F- y
I am very pleased to report that the IET, in agreement) @* E- `3 ]6 W8 G! j8 ?2 |, `
with the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA),# t8 `0 V* c# ^1 Y
will publish, subject to peer review, the best expanded
* N# _" T) P) n5 J: Lpapers from their series of conferences that are directly
3 Y& [$ j& n; P$ [# ~- u: b6 U7 H( k) G+ ^within the scope of IET RPG. It is hoped that other, \: V6 n7 W3 ]! S
renewable energy associations will agree to similar# s3 s2 W0 f# p9 C8 k# `0 v
arrangements as we move forward.6 V1 w7 o5 P$ r3 ?
Papers for this inaugural issue have been carefully. t* V8 u' v0 t6 L8 ]3 I
selected to reflect the core values of the journal, and give8 B; h* H7 S8 V/ k  t
a feel for its intended coverage. Of course this can only
! N# u6 S, _8 ~2 L4 ]- vbe partial and I hope to see a wide diversity of challenging1 u3 l8 o  n- x+ f* b! @' K
research and development published in IET RPG in the
  }5 e) r' C0 A- ^! N6 D8 Tyears to come. I confidently expect the journal to grow in
5 R' o5 f. [1 ~0 A( Gsize and reputation alongside the sector it seeks to represent.3 u# e+ K2 T) u& l. c
I’m confident that way we have organised the journal,8 O6 F- Y( c2 d2 i
together with the first-class peer review and rapid timesto-
: q/ A- h9 r% P' f3 P# ^" v: {decision that we offer, will encourage many you to
2 f. c2 A0 v% J. S/ R% H% Fsubmit your work to IET RPG. Of course I welcome any( Q) G) A; x0 T0 G. G+ Z
