New IET Proceedings: Renewable Energy

In march 2007, the IET introduced a new proceedings title to its list of journals. This is an abtract from the editorial:

2 [6 a& K) f$ Y5 S) N) D+ [. _This new IET journal could not be more timely with interest
/ k. `- A$ o7 ?. i# B3 uin renewable power generation at an all time high. In recent4 w5 R5 @7 s/ u# ^1 v
weeks the European Union has announced a significant$ q' d3 k2 i5 Q( ?4 b- J( J$ \
increase in planned renewable energy capacity driven by) b- J) B* ~- m: [. s
agreed and binding commitments to CO2 emissions
: h4 z8 V& H1 ]- u- b' j8 J4 Qreduction, and other major economic areas including; ?; U/ }8 D; X5 N" F3 \1 ^
China and India have recently announced similarly: m  Q7 j' R' T0 I: {' t
ambitious plans. In North America, the need for sustainable' N# t3 ]& f2 ^2 Y' z0 {
and clean energy is also being increasingly recognised.
' L) g: Z" c" U4 _0 dI was approached by the IET late in 2006 to plan this- x' r2 m3 h1 i7 P4 u
exciting new journal, so you will appreciate that we have
6 u% l* T: A/ `+ R8 u. S$ fmoved very quickly to publish this first issue. I’m
, Q. Z* [" u( B1 w  i( Vextremely grateful to all the authors and referees that have: B! b: A, [# F) g# |( G* Z
helped in this, and also I’d like to record my appreciation2 x8 E5 G/ E* j. \8 P
to the IET team: Stuart Govan; Lee Baldwin and
! {& J7 k) A( Y- L  cCharlotte Hammond, for their support and for cajoling me

Of course there are many excellent journals out there
' C! m: I' Q- |) l+ x. Zcovering renewable energy, in the main focussed on specific
* E$ D- ?# X: N1 G  itechnologies; good examples are Wind Energy, Progress in
1 X) O! T# C: l1 P1 A8 a5 pPhotovoltaics, and Solar Cells and Materials, and Solar5 S* K$ c/ ]2 A) H$ y
Energy has been in print now for over 30 years. However,
% L! n  D2 T5 Ewe felt there was a real need for a high quality, genuinely. m" e, F  F$ \: H7 A
international journal, that covered the issues that arise: @+ ^/ o; Y6 D' z& {4 O0 ~
when renewable energy generation sources are used, and( \1 ^: G! K9 e* O4 }
almost invariably this means that they are connected to& A8 Q6 U4 J4 g
electricity systems. As the proportion of electricity
! d: w+ u% }6 Bgenerated from renewable sources increases, so the
6 Z1 F$ l, q7 {% X) Achallenges of providing a sustainable, safe, reliable and+ t* x$ D( l' u8 G8 y3 |. `1 o
cost effective power system operation become apparent.
8 Z' b2 q( Q/ R  a2 E4 ?% `Considerable current research is aimed at these, in the8 Q( y- n0 }. q- q; o7 G% t  ~+ h* C
main, technical challenges – much of this is unashamedly+ F- W0 f6 H: g. i) }
multi-disciplinary. I hope that IET Renewable Power
, D$ w$ O6 t) Y- o# [2 HGeneration (IET RPG) can capture the best of this research& |9 p5 \- `9 Z4 a4 r3 O
and disseminate it to the increasingly numerous and active
) p" x9 Z! ?/ |9 [  ncommunity of engineers and scientists both researching
0 W; O6 C6 c/ P, X) D8 X3 }the problems and implementing the new knowledge and2 Y; N% E/ G( I; L# p
understanding in a commercial context.  j. D- K6 D3 B/ b4 N  E7 M
I see IET RPG as something that I hope will be valued by2 \% T" o0 S- K2 j7 n- |* O$ l
the renewable energy community and electricity supply
8 j+ A8 V5 }5 z% Nindustry together, and provide an important bridge, _+ j: |" n4 |9 J! N$ g8 V& j
between these two communities. All those involved
6 m, ?* T6 F& e5 s+ W+ ~$ \  Vhave a role to play in ensuring the quality of this journal,: S" @# A) K$ V- X- S+ N1 Z2 g2 y
and through this its success and influence on an increasingly# N6 A2 t6 l/ o0 e
important sector of the economy and one key to a
2 J- ?" l. I7 _" hsustainable and environmentally sound future.
6 Z0 H) {1 Y( }: lI am very pleased to report that the IET, in agreement
+ ]0 ^/ D# b* W- k- U6 P* jwith the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA),
7 q2 L1 N  u0 e3 }will publish, subject to peer review, the best expanded
$ o1 v0 Y; o. y+ i; Kpapers from their series of conferences that are directly
& x+ O* W) D" o6 `8 Nwithin the scope of IET RPG. It is hoped that other0 o) k+ `  Z, A" W* U7 D- Q8 @, W
renewable energy associations will agree to similar
% a: `5 {& f+ m: Tarrangements as we move forward.
7 L  q) H8 \( XPapers for this inaugural issue have been carefully
9 I/ }+ p/ M* W$ E" X) _selected to reflect the core values of the journal, and give- }  b" I; }2 R0 Z5 ?% R8 y5 M! b
a feel for its intended coverage. Of course this can only5 Q4 I; R# w8 }1 y
be partial and I hope to see a wide diversity of challenging
" q! n, F- e' Jresearch and development published in IET RPG in the* t5 E) A: ^1 f$ W( u
years to come. I confidently expect the journal to grow in+ r: Z7 y. X  r
size and reputation alongside the sector it seeks to represent.
2 R7 S6 Y# Z" }3 r' s: ^, z, j  KI’m confident that way we have organised the journal,
9 i& H+ \# O9 z! G, ~together with the first-class peer review and rapid timesto-' p  @3 [; _$ o. C0 F
decision that we offer, will encourage many you to
. T+ P9 `  |- jsubmit your work to IET RPG. Of course I welcome any; j" E/ |( [$ W) C" v$ Z* b! G
suggestions or comments that will help to improve this3 d* _% o" U* n# ~/ v
