This new IET journal could not be more timely with interest : V. F" i$ ~- y: Jin renewable power generation at an all time high. In recent% Z/ T# k8 p! c% Y2 {
weeks the European Union has announced a significant! [. b' y& N5 R; G$ M, |
increase in planned renewable energy capacity driven by: d# y0 b4 H. Y" d) E
agreed and binding commitments to CO2 emissions 6 q, z2 T/ y4 w3 R+ breduction, and other major economic areas including# t( S" R0 T: P# m- G3 C
China and India have recently announced similarly, K3 s7 S& h+ h
ambitious plans. In North America, the need for sustainable 6 ?( l5 Z2 [/ L8 V) y! vand clean energy is also being increasingly recognised., ]4 q8 R& Z0 P4 w3 A2 i/ B
I was approached by the IET late in 2006 to plan this : K+ H* g( a% A4 m: G, ^$ c% xexciting new journal, so you will appreciate that we have4 W; ]% G; t% b
moved very quickly to publish this first issue. I’m 7 P; S7 E$ `/ L2 q; sextremely grateful to all the authors and referees that have J7 z) T- T) r0 a6 a' R/ U/ w7 i

covering renewable energy, in the main focussed on specific3 \& N _, v2 R4 D
technologies; good examples are Wind Energy, Progress in, [, B$ A2 l1 \7 ?
Photovoltaics, and Solar Cells and Materials, and Solar ! f1 c7 {0 l5 ^6 C/ jEnergy has been in print now for over 30 years. However,# p" A2 D; }) c: [$ v+ j" V
we felt there was a real need for a high quality, genuinely ; [. |6 \- o2 ~! k, [1 Ginternational journal, that covered the issues that arise. B/ n! U( b& n6 F7 _& i, |: Z6 x
when renewable energy generation sources are used, and5 Y/ m$ h/ ]0 Q ?5 s- M" x& `
almost invariably this means that they are connected to 7 ], f% v S' M1 n0 l+ z0 |electricity systems. As the proportion of electricity 5 \) C" K- @$ Y/ agenerated from renewable sources increases, so the5 { h6 f9 L5 j4 B
challenges of providing a sustainable, safe, reliable and + ~& [( O6 v0 {, d$ |1 icost effective power system operation become apparent. / ]0 H$ j4 T; K) z. U8 K( y: VConsiderable current research is aimed at these, in the$ m/ m% ]+ |2 u7 ^ g
main, technical challenges – much of this is unashamedly 9 T7 M8 c- p% R# B! amulti-disciplinary. I hope that IET Renewable Power7 y$ F4 l; G9 \9 _9 ^
Generation (IET RPG) can capture the best of this research8 e1 m6 C( |7 ], m+ A' n
and disseminate it to the increasingly numerous and active! Z5 a4 K, k+ Q3 T
community of engineers and scientists both researching - ~& n5 s4 g) B! n9 p3 n3 ]* rthe problems and implementing the new knowledge and 0 B* h" U* \/ P9 u G" Z. qunderstanding in a commercial context.; J- r9 S8 A. j, r
I see IET RPG as something that I hope will be valued by " q9 r! {- A$ t! Y$ kthe renewable energy community and electricity supply $ ~8 t! I, W+ O3 ~' Windustry together, and provide an important bridge) Q: X5 ^/ e: ?" c' J
between these two communities. All those involved : T" _7 _8 l, Z" J" Nhave a role to play in ensuring the quality of this journal, 3 K5 P; M5 ?8 i" p9 L7 O: Tand through this its success and influence on an increasingly9 [) }6 f2 C" d& U4 I
important sector of the economy and one key to a8 }' C3 D; T/ F5 h$ v' j; [

I am very pleased to report that the IET, in agreement0 _. \, P- b1 Q
with the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA),- Z8 Q, Z7 G0 l' t9 T) i( Y
will publish, subject to peer review, the best expanded- R9 m* `& N x+ o, |/ S. Q
papers from their series of conferences that are directly. f& c9 a( M l1 i+ V; @
within the scope of IET RPG. It is hoped that other9 x7 s2 O# q9 p
renewable energy associations will agree to similar / z. s* i. g- q; O, `/ G" E: y) Karrangements as we move forward. 8 G! H; e7 t7 T- Y+ Y* b6 b% TPapers for this inaugural issue have been carefully & X0 P9 p' Q( u# [selected to reflect the core values of the journal, and give1 {# K! |& H1 m* a. ^9 [
a feel for its intended coverage. Of course this can only ~) e2 A0 m7 Y: a# j
be partial and I hope to see a wide diversity of challenging ; ?3 k) `8 _% U4 G/ Gresearch and development published in IET RPG in the T5 ~/ ~+ \9 X }- Zyears to come. I confidently expect the journal to grow in7 G* F+ d( P' d8 e7 k- |0 e
