New IET Proceedings: Renewable Energy

In march 2007, the IET introduced a new proceedings title to its list of journals. This is an abtract from the editorial:

6 M7 G( V$ {' f9 d8 U9 G. g* n2 HThis new IET journal could not be more timely with interest7 W0 P+ f( v5 p! ]' M: C2 o
in renewable power generation at an all time high. In recent0 Y: r9 P3 N" B* s0 y+ [) Z. d
weeks the European Union has announced a significant
7 x# Z4 Z$ r4 ^* eincrease in planned renewable energy capacity driven by2 f& s  Y* m# A. b" g: N
agreed and binding commitments to CO2 emissions2 a$ W* N- K. S3 z- W. g/ y
reduction, and other major economic areas including, E' N1 ^: Y4 T" v2 M1 U  l" b
China and India have recently announced similarly
- u4 Q' l6 f. x5 g2 e- g: jambitious plans. In North America, the need for sustainable2 C3 N% A  q1 q% S" a% |$ X. n
and clean energy is also being increasingly recognised.' p% r/ k. t: D1 D
I was approached by the IET late in 2006 to plan this0 T8 S! X: a# _& f0 B: j
exciting new journal, so you will appreciate that we have7 U$ F7 d& x- i9 Y4 Y7 N6 \
moved very quickly to publish this first issue. I’m8 C" b  q. B8 S( ~' z6 ?
extremely grateful to all the authors and referees that have2 y2 m. `5 p1 R) y
helped in this, and also I’d like to record my appreciation! o" h; j- I4 H
to the IET team: Stuart Govan; Lee Baldwin and- ^9 J3 V" F1 I  t; O# E

Of course there are many excellent journals out there% T' W3 O2 m9 O  Y* C
covering renewable energy, in the main focussed on specific/ X) _! s; H1 O) N
technologies; good examples are Wind Energy, Progress in9 i( R) _/ e) b$ y+ s. B. k' a# _
Photovoltaics, and Solar Cells and Materials, and Solar) M8 h) N; R5 K1 t$ G
Energy has been in print now for over 30 years. However,/ L/ v/ D+ R3 P& W- u+ n& \
we felt there was a real need for a high quality, genuinely  D" L! g& M, g5 b( ?* U& w( W
international journal, that covered the issues that arise( K: |9 K' L/ H; g- Z
when renewable energy generation sources are used, and2 T3 z! `  H1 _' N6 q
almost invariably this means that they are connected to
1 ?% f, M- k# e2 Y# D2 gelectricity systems. As the proportion of electricity. u! o- t5 G2 ~+ ~! A3 i
generated from renewable sources increases, so the
) M2 n3 B/ o7 C2 l% M" echallenges of providing a sustainable, safe, reliable and- b2 X* q6 h2 d& K5 B# l3 }- [
cost effective power system operation become apparent.
( q" W" f# c1 Q5 K3 n$ oConsiderable current research is aimed at these, in the
+ _+ J2 ~1 |* R( }# w; c# k6 D( `+ k4 |main, technical challenges – much of this is unashamedly* Y$ D3 i- A# _; V0 y$ }3 u; c
multi-disciplinary. I hope that IET Renewable Power
; i2 R; f% s2 s7 p& Y$ @Generation (IET RPG) can capture the best of this research
: L7 w+ Y2 ~2 V3 B) ]& U1 c6 `( Iand disseminate it to the increasingly numerous and active
( ?- v! A0 `8 f" Q, g- w, p) a& G2 Hcommunity of engineers and scientists both researching- c7 E+ U1 G" q' n) U
the problems and implementing the new knowledge and
! S( w- C/ w% Xunderstanding in a commercial context.$ ?5 M4 i7 @1 V+ S$ z3 {6 Q, R
I see IET RPG as something that I hope will be valued by
: J! R1 \5 Q) H. ?. T; rthe renewable energy community and electricity supply3 P4 b% X! q/ v$ u
industry together, and provide an important bridge! {! ?  k8 W/ r  j; ^$ Q3 C( {
between these two communities. All those involved
* \! B+ r8 o9 x, c1 A5 T. shave a role to play in ensuring the quality of this journal,
  E2 b0 n! T$ s5 c% iand through this its success and influence on an increasingly
, f' K2 `7 N; v0 ?important sector of the economy and one key to a6 c* a) p8 F) r: v9 M  D
sustainable and environmentally sound future.
9 c1 G1 F0 m7 f# [/ G1 [$ ~I am very pleased to report that the IET, in agreement
& |: R) N; H$ {with the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA),4 W, q  Z( F- y; d4 z
will publish, subject to peer review, the best expanded7 z. a! m( q" ^. c$ E
papers from their series of conferences that are directly! G7 S8 ~, N5 [/ b. r/ n
within the scope of IET RPG. It is hoped that other/ V/ |4 s/ L1 i" N: V
renewable energy associations will agree to similar
# s. Z4 D: C! ]* O! Harrangements as we move forward.
, Y! k  F  C1 ^1 s4 [2 N! s+ BPapers for this inaugural issue have been carefully9 a( a6 I' F0 W  `
selected to reflect the core values of the journal, and give- f! j. p) N6 A2 ~
a feel for its intended coverage. Of course this can only4 z9 i( B! Z# p: [* v4 I
be partial and I hope to see a wide diversity of challenging: C9 x1 N9 O9 a3 r, n- J
research and development published in IET RPG in the
3 s/ S! R- C* U" p7 syears to come. I confidently expect the journal to grow in
" b* ?  i/ c9 ?3 l8 Dsize and reputation alongside the sector it seeks to represent.
/ l5 Q8 c* L! II’m confident that way we have organised the journal,
2 L7 D7 W1 a+ n& X9 atogether with the first-class peer review and rapid timesto-
$ k6 ]. I" C5 p, H4 Z; U+ |5 ^decision that we offer, will encourage many you to3 r4 G: L  C& X3 e/ J: u& ~" z& w
submit your work to IET RPG. Of course I welcome any0 p& _( e/ @) M, r0 W" k
suggestions or comments that will help to improve this- M' T2 x* q6 e
new forum for your research.
