New IET Proceedings: Renewable Energy

In march 2007, the IET introduced a new proceedings title to its list of journals. This is an abtract from the editorial:

1 ~9 q  o. K( V4 F& F) }This new IET journal could not be more timely with interest
9 x  o9 I6 z  I  y- |/ A) ~in renewable power generation at an all time high. In recent4 I4 A# ?. h* B$ g7 c1 b
weeks the European Union has announced a significant
) f. Q- r. _" T) P$ S# ~increase in planned renewable energy capacity driven by; g: ^" b1 o) g
agreed and binding commitments to CO2 emissions
) E" l  u+ w  O. hreduction, and other major economic areas including" a# {# s! X' u6 A" M
China and India have recently announced similarly
$ z. K- q1 Z) A; ?2 g: @3 G% wambitious plans. In North America, the need for sustainable! \! M/ g/ Y9 f+ G
and clean energy is also being increasingly recognised.
) O8 A+ r1 O) p% L$ W% GI was approached by the IET late in 2006 to plan this
# O$ x1 ^+ A6 p+ e9 Cexciting new journal, so you will appreciate that we have+ r7 p  d3 }& w9 u4 u
moved very quickly to publish this first issue. I’m
. h" ]! v2 Y$ D3 s8 U7 Uextremely grateful to all the authors and referees that have
; O7 R* l! v- M" c& n; G: j: g! l, U8 |helped in this, and also I’d like to record my appreciation7 b1 f3 R9 E$ n* I
to the IET team: Stuart Govan; Lee Baldwin and4 J: H9 e5 z. ]

covering renewable energy, in the main focussed on specific, c/ j- q! w% O! B; A- G5 V; h
technologies; good examples are Wind Energy, Progress in; ^: o* ]$ g0 v% o$ n
Photovoltaics, and Solar Cells and Materials, and Solar
1 s- K! `* O8 G7 {) yEnergy has been in print now for over 30 years. However,. |5 y0 x5 Z5 S6 r0 E: y
we felt there was a real need for a high quality, genuinely" W4 D% v" @) n+ l( q0 ^( \* [  N  @
international journal, that covered the issues that arise
5 y( O5 \9 S* l( Iwhen renewable energy generation sources are used, and
& `  b; }9 P. _) P/ }3 lalmost invariably this means that they are connected to& o  {/ q) x% ?' Y4 U, Q
electricity systems. As the proportion of electricity: G' l3 ^& l$ M6 Y3 U
generated from renewable sources increases, so the
  o# J" A% x' q, e; lchallenges of providing a sustainable, safe, reliable and
5 ]6 V  F4 x' G2 r1 scost effective power system operation become apparent.
/ f; n; n3 Q6 A) Y; kConsiderable current research is aimed at these, in the  B; x5 a- M& Z: |. L
main, technical challenges – much of this is unashamedly
6 \6 I- ]# h! qmulti-disciplinary. I hope that IET Renewable Power$ a+ D" g; z% o+ L- a+ Q
Generation (IET RPG) can capture the best of this research
9 z2 E( E9 B9 c' X# aand disseminate it to the increasingly numerous and active
. a) w( ^) o! ]0 z8 xcommunity of engineers and scientists both researching
8 O/ N3 h  u4 o0 D. H( t* A: s5 {the problems and implementing the new knowledge and
7 T2 o1 [/ ]" S2 ?' j( J) ^" Aunderstanding in a commercial context.
2 Z; |8 T1 ~! I" KI see IET RPG as something that I hope will be valued by
! x, A( d* A8 ?the renewable energy community and electricity supply
+ F: {: Q) q0 B& B9 [. C. D: F: aindustry together, and provide an important bridge
& ]6 x- j  |) z' D2 Dbetween these two communities. All those involved
5 W3 t0 h% y' L# o" Jhave a role to play in ensuring the quality of this journal,
" a1 y+ r- _# N2 ^7 g- L1 Land through this its success and influence on an increasingly, U4 O( d* A& m+ G. L' e/ t7 B) ~
important sector of the economy and one key to a
/ a; P  ?/ K) P1 d7 v5 @sustainable and environmentally sound future.6 F* P9 Y4 y/ N
I am very pleased to report that the IET, in agreement4 u! ~: ^" d/ B7 O
with the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA),
/ A: I5 p$ T: v4 z! [will publish, subject to peer review, the best expanded- M' a4 L( I% H; A( p) k: R; C4 \
papers from their series of conferences that are directly, r& x6 q1 _% r! O, O3 s- M- J
within the scope of IET RPG. It is hoped that other2 T& A* W4 {! w: i% f$ B
renewable energy associations will agree to similar" y! I+ @2 n3 `0 a% I
arrangements as we move forward.# r2 J% w% I. O. S9 y- y
Papers for this inaugural issue have been carefully
6 e6 L6 a/ _$ B- gselected to reflect the core values of the journal, and give
$ [' |, ^# C! s- ea feel for its intended coverage. Of course this can only
. @- v6 C' V' Mbe partial and I hope to see a wide diversity of challenging  v; ~9 O9 T, F9 n2 W* \( ?* F# \
research and development published in IET RPG in the
, x7 Q  K9 w0 ~' u" y+ Oyears to come. I confidently expect the journal to grow in, |7 o' U# t; F+ s
size and reputation alongside the sector it seeks to represent.. h3 @/ k* C. T! V
I’m confident that way we have organised the journal,; z" t) d7 S' N8 {
together with the first-class peer review and rapid timesto-
) |, h* ^! F8 O3 o* U/ O$ mdecision that we offer, will encourage many you to+ o- R* f; \' H7 D- p
submit your work to IET RPG. Of course I welcome any0 t5 T$ W/ S2 t& P  T$ @( ]
suggestions or comments that will help to improve this5 Y! d0 M1 \3 t) {1 T' L
new forum for your research.
