New IET Proceedings: Renewable Energy

In march 2007, the IET introduced a new proceedings title to its list of journals. This is an abtract from the editorial:

editorial( C5 T$ f. w7 J+ ^7 k5 s

This new IET journal could not be more timely with interest" G1 M8 B5 Z6 {5 ?. T' T  X
in renewable power generation at an all time high. In recent
* y5 t) W7 Y; K" hweeks the European Union has announced a significant8 F, l! q) l. ^9 p7 t
increase in planned renewable energy capacity driven by7 @7 l  Q% v) A) ^
agreed and binding commitments to CO2 emissions
1 H- }7 w- p  R* xreduction, and other major economic areas including: B  x# n" r2 U7 \7 U# G
China and India have recently announced similarly" p! u9 c" G" b) W: Z
ambitious plans. In North America, the need for sustainable4 H! i; I4 G5 A  M
and clean energy is also being increasingly recognised.; i8 r, {  ^/ H3 r" A' e
I was approached by the IET late in 2006 to plan this
) E5 N0 x- p: i! U; o2 f# cexciting new journal, so you will appreciate that we have
# @& C3 G2 [  i2 \* I8 R5 I* ^; omoved very quickly to publish this first issue. I’m
  C! K2 X9 U4 g3 j0 N1 ]6 p# d5 {extremely grateful to all the authors and referees that have
* W! R- H+ `1 S) ]( y/ {helped in this, and also I’d like to record my appreciation# W, S; y5 ]$ \$ m$ n7 J' ?
to the IET team: Stuart Govan; Lee Baldwin and- r  F1 B- C5 m
Charlotte Hammond, for their support and for cajoling me

Of course there are many excellent journals out there
& S+ H+ C# M- Lcovering renewable energy, in the main focussed on specific1 {3 r, \$ @: a5 \/ E. B2 V
technologies; good examples are Wind Energy, Progress in
) o) y+ O9 b2 o1 f9 F* SPhotovoltaics, and Solar Cells and Materials, and Solar
1 v  y# q) V+ GEnergy has been in print now for over 30 years. However,
7 F1 c2 h; m! |2 w. dwe felt there was a real need for a high quality, genuinely  D. @0 {6 e* E" N+ ~. C
international journal, that covered the issues that arise
0 |" r2 B/ s7 l; Mwhen renewable energy generation sources are used, and
6 B0 g( V( b) a8 y0 galmost invariably this means that they are connected to' N/ o, t& |4 K# u
electricity systems. As the proportion of electricity  Y& a9 z) _2 V
generated from renewable sources increases, so the
6 [! e: b) ~) p  c3 D/ @+ D8 B1 wchallenges of providing a sustainable, safe, reliable and5 o( j  P2 \* \( Z6 Q& P
cost effective power system operation become apparent.4 v3 T" t  b& V0 n6 a' [8 E2 ?6 I. t
Considerable current research is aimed at these, in the
% h. l9 B( F6 N( h# N" }& @4 qmain, technical challenges – much of this is unashamedly' u; G7 C& S4 J% a) X! i
multi-disciplinary. I hope that IET Renewable Power* g+ l: ?/ z7 g0 n; y
Generation (IET RPG) can capture the best of this research
1 x& b9 j  D  k0 r! t/ V6 N- C0 Wand disseminate it to the increasingly numerous and active/ Y* `, C7 z, Q
community of engineers and scientists both researching0 a1 l. n4 s4 _$ E0 f# v2 h8 O
the problems and implementing the new knowledge and/ ^; a  U. o+ f! j
understanding in a commercial context.# ^+ N" n3 A0 ]* U/ w* M
I see IET RPG as something that I hope will be valued by
3 J; B4 m, r. bthe renewable energy community and electricity supply
4 f* n+ x  |# F. b3 T4 Kindustry together, and provide an important bridge
* m1 T& w* Q' v- [+ [& b( ?$ bbetween these two communities. All those involved  [, E, ?: F" l# d3 v
have a role to play in ensuring the quality of this journal,: w. P# [8 S( k
and through this its success and influence on an increasingly( `( G$ ?" P# o5 B
important sector of the economy and one key to a
; }! ~2 \3 q$ i' q5 Fsustainable and environmentally sound future.. m! \/ m& _3 p. k  ^
I am very pleased to report that the IET, in agreement6 X6 e# c) c5 ]. h9 Y% k9 H
with the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA),2 P/ m6 b; `! C7 F5 t; p; H$ U( z
will publish, subject to peer review, the best expanded
7 N# i. g0 U: g. K2 g' gpapers from their series of conferences that are directly
( c) A5 T0 L) M* V3 D# [7 x" g9 X# B& X2 e* ~within the scope of IET RPG. It is hoped that other
8 o1 p1 k* f: f* `# yrenewable energy associations will agree to similar
' C8 b6 d$ x4 e! V" zarrangements as we move forward.. b6 {% b& K/ L: L9 \
Papers for this inaugural issue have been carefully9 |/ T/ c4 U! j, X' z: g" M- T# m# l. g
selected to reflect the core values of the journal, and give- b( H+ w  G; R' G; R! ~
a feel for its intended coverage. Of course this can only
& c7 o1 k" I5 Obe partial and I hope to see a wide diversity of challenging, p# b& x6 e5 |" P+ Q/ o4 X
research and development published in IET RPG in the
- X1 \/ \9 ?7 \7 q" Dyears to come. I confidently expect the journal to grow in
( y3 M2 k7 H8 E2 Fsize and reputation alongside the sector it seeks to represent.8 h! O* X) P% t; j% A3 b
I’m confident that way we have organised the journal,
/ @- I6 ~9 u. y" q8 K2 g, otogether with the first-class peer review and rapid timesto-
6 V2 O# P" H: mdecision that we offer, will encourage many you to
( A# y2 R; _. i6 z* P; {submit your work to IET RPG. Of course I welcome any( t/ X' \4 w1 F# l( o, T5 U5 F
suggestions or comments that will help to improve this. L# e, L+ o, ~- G) p
new forum for your research.
