New IET Proceedings: Renewable Energy

In march 2007, the IET introduced a new proceedings title to its list of journals. This is an abtract from the editorial:  u. _3 L5 n# @+ C

& D& ^9 c* p. |, lThis new IET journal could not be more timely with interest
3 Q' u. i7 l: @, Y5 \7 {0 Z3 Pin renewable power generation at an all time high. In recent5 \: c5 x/ L& |* ^) j$ p7 [
weeks the European Union has announced a significant
7 a8 [4 R( E/ c- Z2 }increase in planned renewable energy capacity driven by, {' z4 |6 c2 D- O! h* H
agreed and binding commitments to CO2 emissions
2 p8 ]( j6 _9 C1 P: z. f' g8 z4 Breduction, and other major economic areas including6 D8 n' Z: g- e; h! K
China and India have recently announced similarly  t$ O: r7 v2 L, c9 g% d" \7 b
ambitious plans. In North America, the need for sustainable( v4 _2 ?! B- _* ]
and clean energy is also being increasingly recognised.8 V  X/ O- W$ c+ G) |& M1 P2 Q
I was approached by the IET late in 2006 to plan this6 P" F! p8 y* p8 s- g9 x
exciting new journal, so you will appreciate that we have
0 P# L9 T  v# `+ dmoved very quickly to publish this first issue. I’m
, {+ M' u9 L2 k8 Q# f- x4 Rextremely grateful to all the authors and referees that have' C5 L7 r+ ]1 e
helped in this, and also I’d like to record my appreciation
) n3 V; m& p+ |: B' ^to the IET team: Stuart Govan; Lee Baldwin and
7 l7 r# l' v2 T5 J" l' fCharlotte Hammond, for their support and for cajoling me3 h4 `5 D) V- o' j$ d- t
as necessary.
2 ~5 L  B7 A6 l7 ~5 w& XOf course there are many excellent journals out there1 X- h! }9 T9 S1 [  j9 J% _
covering renewable energy, in the main focussed on specific
/ x. J6 O3 o7 t. N& o* y; p& etechnologies; good examples are Wind Energy, Progress in$ S5 v( k- R8 Z
Photovoltaics, and Solar Cells and Materials, and Solar6 b4 I$ {& v- z. y
Energy has been in print now for over 30 years. However,( o+ }& J) J! U4 u
we felt there was a real need for a high quality, genuinely. _: G) ?! y4 G
international journal, that covered the issues that arise0 f" D) B8 j$ c! e, U3 F: W
when renewable energy generation sources are used, and
7 n! P8 X6 g9 u# |0 m. Ialmost invariably this means that they are connected to3 h6 e7 l) w3 B0 l/ V+ Q+ p
electricity systems. As the proportion of electricity
+ k2 ?2 I7 K: j* t& M3 o& a8 K, R2 j' ^generated from renewable sources increases, so the, J* p& R$ ?( N$ S
challenges of providing a sustainable, safe, reliable and7 N+ X% O8 B4 O& M# j
cost effective power system operation become apparent.
& F5 j, \4 O0 I6 ^Considerable current research is aimed at these, in the
( Z* c" A! N% n% t) E1 A1 mmain, technical challenges – much of this is unashamedly
- D  h+ ^; ]5 d3 @multi-disciplinary. I hope that IET Renewable Power" |( Q, x1 k; N# m& M
Generation (IET RPG) can capture the best of this research. y) _/ v, q1 U+ R" G+ }/ Y
and disseminate it to the increasingly numerous and active9 Z6 y$ ?- l+ D
community of engineers and scientists both researching0 s1 Q$ d. n  ^% I3 [# u5 X
the problems and implementing the new knowledge and1 W( u' K. U; I1 ^! ^
understanding in a commercial context.6 L" a$ o- C& |5 A6 \3 G
I see IET RPG as something that I hope will be valued by
7 k7 q" G4 f/ r1 M$ K# H& jthe renewable energy community and electricity supply
9 _0 S. I& y" J2 h2 n2 Uindustry together, and provide an important bridge  t( A+ x- r3 j  G7 \, e1 j0 }9 ~
between these two communities. All those involved
/ B8 r& g7 @; ~% r' l2 S4 Xhave a role to play in ensuring the quality of this journal,
/ M2 M* C* O. u  \' ^9 Vand through this its success and influence on an increasingly
) z- r9 X8 O' _+ B! U/ Yimportant sector of the economy and one key to a
0 ~; q# Z+ N8 M* ^4 C( j3 isustainable and environmentally sound future.
. D4 f4 Q" M5 I2 j8 LI am very pleased to report that the IET, in agreement9 u5 C/ w- ?8 x3 T$ n6 `
with the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA),
+ ^% q6 \8 k0 y6 X2 Z" r1 Bwill publish, subject to peer review, the best expanded
' H* L! k5 j2 X. }% Z3 C1 j% z, Upapers from their series of conferences that are directly
# L! {9 \7 j; f3 B" F9 kwithin the scope of IET RPG. It is hoped that other
1 ]: ]2 }) n6 ?6 d1 t" I9 x; X0 Trenewable energy associations will agree to similar
5 I- S6 w, M. l. i8 i% ]arrangements as we move forward./ }: u4 B' R& U9 i+ M
Papers for this inaugural issue have been carefully
# i6 _# ^- I1 @9 W1 A, m8 A% cselected to reflect the core values of the journal, and give0 G9 F: W8 p, B! n6 D# R
a feel for its intended coverage. Of course this can only
+ L8 Y2 L8 f3 S: d' c& W  Ybe partial and I hope to see a wide diversity of challenging5 U7 D4 x# {) E2 w2 e! }2 U9 x* _
research and development published in IET RPG in the
5 m7 ]- x6 |7 I1 @9 M; Hyears to come. I confidently expect the journal to grow in
" H: E1 s- v6 F: `; t0 f6 r/ q8 Psize and reputation alongside the sector it seeks to represent.2 E0 {/ U9 @* T  f* h
I’m confident that way we have organised the journal,# t9 F' c# ~6 ^! J2 S8 r) P; }
together with the first-class peer review and rapid timesto-
! O5 V7 n0 f" R- a  b+ ^$ Mdecision that we offer, will encourage many you to  X* P; Q1 l% ^$ `2 R9 T
submit your work to IET RPG. Of course I welcome any; Q% M- Y) r. k1 @
suggestions or comments that will help to improve this. {. A7 z0 z% P' @
