New IET Proceedings: Renewable Energy

In march 2007, the IET introduced a new proceedings title to its list of journals. This is an abtract from the editorial:

editorial
) K* w  l/ J% ?( W8 P& o+ R) _-----------. p9 }/ |  t  |  Q% u4 k
This new IET journal could not be more timely with interest5 q- i4 j- S* [' ~+ D
in renewable power generation at an all time high. In recent
# @6 ]- V1 z- t: O. _& Bweeks the European Union has announced a significant
, ~; c) i6 K4 E( j$ Q% aincrease in planned renewable energy capacity driven by- n+ U8 Z2 M$ A- }
agreed and binding commitments to CO2 emissions1 k* P) W: p) d; j& a
reduction, and other major economic areas including! m* g  H+ ]7 h& V
China and India have recently announced similarly( ]6 Y& _0 l4 `6 ]% T4 h" V/ x
ambitious plans. In North America, the need for sustainable7 @0 z) p& I4 O& `8 j+ _0 A; U
and clean energy is also being increasingly recognised.
3 E  M. f( s4 z; N& a* ^/ C0 kI was approached by the IET late in 2006 to plan this
0 m! l( I; ~, ~/ O, S) kexciting new journal, so you will appreciate that we have
. r2 K' i4 [& g: R" i, B* h4 imoved very quickly to publish this first issue. I’m! e9 K6 V; X7 n- _9 T+ z: f7 Z3 ?. G0 T
extremely grateful to all the authors and referees that have7 Z% `, H; w& k4 j, P6 u
helped in this, and also I’d like to record my appreciation
8 G$ Q: r7 G, |( k1 b' F! @! hto the IET team: Stuart Govan; Lee Baldwin and' ~5 H7 M" x! _: ?, c
Charlotte Hammond, for their support and for cajoling me

) p( P: n5 O4 J1 B/ Q: GOf course there are many excellent journals out there' q& I5 k8 B$ b' B/ K
covering renewable energy, in the main focussed on specific8 O2 F/ z: G9 d$ \* p7 e6 t, g: I# q
technologies; good examples are Wind Energy, Progress in8 R8 r% [+ }$ _0 w% y( o
Photovoltaics, and Solar Cells and Materials, and Solar
5 {% |$ t: K# f' @Energy has been in print now for over 30 years. However,- l2 r1 B9 G4 p
we felt there was a real need for a high quality, genuinely9 G( `5 p4 z- n, H5 I# X
international journal, that covered the issues that arise& m+ n* t) f$ r% T8 w
when renewable energy generation sources are used, and
8 N0 j' L) `9 \. r4 {6 w4 J' galmost invariably this means that they are connected to  O; q' K8 W4 N( P) u0 p  M  K( ~! C
electricity systems. As the proportion of electricity
- H7 W' d' z% i1 J! y; Pgenerated from renewable sources increases, so the; H. K) S/ i* i& z  O, n8 Y
challenges of providing a sustainable, safe, reliable and
! R( ?3 }) Z1 y  v& P! r$ ]% Hcost effective power system operation become apparent.
; {2 M4 F2 N6 C7 [) BConsiderable current research is aimed at these, in the
$ ]$ e# J" K* D7 d+ |/ s+ M, Tmain, technical challenges – much of this is unashamedly
3 A; X( [9 o/ @multi-disciplinary. I hope that IET Renewable Power: L, m2 l: l! h! c7 Y1 d
Generation (IET RPG) can capture the best of this research
9 |+ t. p+ g1 e- `and disseminate it to the increasingly numerous and active
3 m3 y+ y3 i9 c# o1 V% fcommunity of engineers and scientists both researching
( V& b( U6 q9 ~- ?, W- c# O( Gthe problems and implementing the new knowledge and
" H) N9 K; M1 Q7 Q9 ounderstanding in a commercial context.
# [/ F; `& \( f9 i- GI see IET RPG as something that I hope will be valued by
& Y  c, Q$ i" D1 b8 Y2 t( u! {+ athe renewable energy community and electricity supply1 _/ ~3 ^% `2 g
industry together, and provide an important bridge
! K) }3 T6 N7 Z, B0 Ebetween these two communities. All those involved
+ H2 T7 q: \7 \! shave a role to play in ensuring the quality of this journal,
$ m: ~/ r" d/ w1 I% t& Zand through this its success and influence on an increasingly$ w# f; y. r# n+ R/ W
important sector of the economy and one key to a. t, @: x3 F" b1 D+ n3 z
sustainable and environmentally sound future.% ~- N2 Q) ?8 d) r# g; P
I am very pleased to report that the IET, in agreement7 m6 U5 y! Z3 t1 p6 ?
with the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA),
3 X' r6 K0 [8 \* x* U8 S1 v' h% pwill publish, subject to peer review, the best expanded
0 ]& x$ R! E% K  H( Cpapers from their series of conferences that are directly
" G; {$ d6 C2 r! X2 swithin the scope of IET RPG. It is hoped that other
/ ]+ |& {3 P8 x# B4 R" Prenewable energy associations will agree to similar
  J0 x8 d% f* w2 Carrangements as we move forward.
) ~! p6 t' F% ?4 i2 U$ GPapers for this inaugural issue have been carefully+ f) \  p% k7 T8 E, ?# q
selected to reflect the core values of the journal, and give' G( o. Q" u5 {5 O; L/ }% O  q4 d
a feel for its intended coverage. Of course this can only0 `% E" r7 r' V; d9 V6 W+ c4 n
be partial and I hope to see a wide diversity of challenging
  g- O# v/ }6 Nresearch and development published in IET RPG in the
( `+ _! a& v" j8 `& H4 cyears to come. I confidently expect the journal to grow in! w9 R5 `6 M# K/ c
size and reputation alongside the sector it seeks to represent.# O0 o+ U! ~4 R+ S4 D" ^
I’m confident that way we have organised the journal,
. b! z% i# U: w& A! ^- |0 A% ]$ Rtogether with the first-class peer review and rapid timesto-
# P% f1 d" x1 v* u: D: P  ?decision that we offer, will encourage many you to
$ P/ Y$ k0 K* J. _, A4 j( j2 ysubmit your work to IET RPG. Of course I welcome any" q$ g  s, R9 a& k3 \9 T2 V& O
suggestions or comments that will help to improve this
