in renewable power generation at an all time high. In recent$ T$ ]& W3 m- P3 V5 d
weeks the European Union has announced a significant . M9 M1 R; J9 \) Z7 |1 Pincrease in planned renewable energy capacity driven by ' {$ M+ W+ {- @0 jagreed and binding commitments to CO2 emissions " { b( E2 `5 p0 C, u8 _3 kreduction, and other major economic areas including& Y" v( [5 |/ k8 w
China and India have recently announced similarly * L/ D1 a+ R8 Z0 {2 eambitious plans. In North America, the need for sustainable 9 V1 ~6 q; m4 G+ ? Band clean energy is also being increasingly recognised. , V% a! {/ \$ H; Y" t# [* ?I was approached by the IET late in 2006 to plan this7 {( B7 G5 t) ]/ `& e
exciting new journal, so you will appreciate that we have , ]1 ^0 I5 Y$ i2 }; V5 fmoved very quickly to publish this first issue. I’m3 C, F1 P# L8 `9 @3 {4 ?9 o* w

Of course there are many excellent journals out there4 Q1 t$ U/ E* ?5 S
covering renewable energy, in the main focussed on specific 5 O" Q; E6 j& q1 ttechnologies; good examples are Wind Energy, Progress in; M3 C+ X' ^) J7 f
Photovoltaics, and Solar Cells and Materials, and Solar ; |# h' X# j1 b2 [0 TEnergy has been in print now for over 30 years. However, . ]5 U8 m$ L' Q4 D+ u( ?& U% Uwe felt there was a real need for a high quality, genuinely , {0 O; _3 `" W: @4 o- Ninternational journal, that covered the issues that arise 5 {# ^( z8 c* X: Owhen renewable energy generation sources are used, and 5 h0 C; _1 F0 zalmost invariably this means that they are connected to ) I+ }$ l( Y; a, a3 ]electricity systems. As the proportion of electricity% p8 v9 P) O# w4 v& H0 ^
generated from renewable sources increases, so the + x7 x) h% F7 M; uchallenges of providing a sustainable, safe, reliable and ) m+ _! M: W/ Lcost effective power system operation become apparent.# k0 {: w! ~9 F! i
Considerable current research is aimed at these, in the 6 B- V+ a& Y& l7 Q" k1 R4 [4 ~main, technical challenges – much of this is unashamedly 9 c+ N/ r1 k6 z- F: Hmulti-disciplinary. I hope that IET Renewable Power $ m2 Q& W' M4 V5 \4 YGeneration (IET RPG) can capture the best of this research0 \' r0 J) W a4 G. H
and disseminate it to the increasingly numerous and active% L5 u; h8 A9 b" l6 i
community of engineers and scientists both researching ! G* W, N5 v$ H0 x* Hthe problems and implementing the new knowledge and " e' Y; H7 F5 @ kunderstanding in a commercial context. , `9 t q# X9 y4 I1 a3 K8 fI see IET RPG as something that I hope will be valued by, n: @ a* G/ j3 O$ M: _$ S
the renewable energy community and electricity supply " n6 V4 z* l V4 Z+ Y e4 A, N3 Q9 Findustry together, and provide an important bridge % R$ q3 g" p4 f" sbetween these two communities. All those involved * m* Q% z( e1 Y4 S' @& W, Vhave a role to play in ensuring the quality of this journal, $ \% S8 k- M5 x6 v! Uand through this its success and influence on an increasingly4 g& v7 h) i( v: @ F8 j$ x( s
important sector of the economy and one key to a0 J3 ^# r: h: T' w1 J/ ?# e
sustainable and environmentally sound future.- k' _; Y: R, a/ b3 {
I am very pleased to report that the IET, in agreement3 e6 t( ?9 t. _7 t
with the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA), $ K F8 l5 @4 O6 I# Z+ p' N% G% Owill publish, subject to peer review, the best expanded 6 q9 r2 h9 h) q8 U, tpapers from their series of conferences that are directly 8 P7 |' X. _% Rwithin the scope of IET RPG. It is hoped that other: x6 p: D, E! |- s. W
renewable energy associations will agree to similar# k9 P8 ^2 F) s) I$ F7 @
arrangements as we move forward.2 R, x0 w9 l* O# r2 I% u# u
Papers for this inaugural issue have been carefully$ W* P7 _9 ~3 K A
selected to reflect the core values of the journal, and give" {/ Q& J7 M* ^" w. M
a feel for its intended coverage. Of course this can only$ g+ U% ]0 B" o" y0 |' U
