New IET Proceedings: Renewable Energy

In march 2007, the IET introduced a new proceedings title to its list of journals. This is an abtract from the editorial:

8 z. r, f+ X9 l# ?# u& BThis new IET journal could not be more timely with interest$ {8 F8 h+ ?/ ~0 U! G+ @
in renewable power generation at an all time high. In recent& @2 H$ i5 p: }2 D4 a* A' C( X
weeks the European Union has announced a significant8 X. `- m$ w) I; T$ l1 x( F; }
increase in planned renewable energy capacity driven by
7 j7 B  f' P# m2 S9 V" @# V- lagreed and binding commitments to CO2 emissions: e  S2 _& Z, p" J- q
reduction, and other major economic areas including
& Q3 X3 ?. ^3 Q" D* F1 uChina and India have recently announced similarly
4 I9 j/ Q4 ?3 [' cambitious plans. In North America, the need for sustainable/ r2 d( m1 w" g: Y3 b- ?
and clean energy is also being increasingly recognised.( e1 r0 ], v8 X; W
I was approached by the IET late in 2006 to plan this  z6 x) x* Z2 }' c6 o1 w3 \
exciting new journal, so you will appreciate that we have& t6 |; M( K/ |  \5 p" K- K
moved very quickly to publish this first issue. I’m! x+ k1 q* }3 t. p  @' D& q9 M
extremely grateful to all the authors and referees that have
; p  I. |' M; X  u+ B7 Dhelped in this, and also I’d like to record my appreciation
( M+ R$ D9 U* R8 z) [to the IET team: Stuart Govan; Lee Baldwin and
: B2 q0 \/ e) c# c8 j8 TCharlotte Hammond, for their support and for cajoling me: a9 X# j  ^( N2 V& K. R
as necessary.! x0 k! o) ?  G( z: u# s
Of course there are many excellent journals out there
$ ]+ ~) n0 g$ R. v$ k0 Dcovering renewable energy, in the main focussed on specific
7 Z. j' E( g" E& T9 S2 S4 Y% Ctechnologies; good examples are Wind Energy, Progress in
3 b/ E# C6 w1 M3 o4 c  dPhotovoltaics, and Solar Cells and Materials, and Solar; Y8 G& W# y9 }7 F  ?
Energy has been in print now for over 30 years. However,
* D, c; Q6 j: s* K. p5 g1 M7 r" i; uwe felt there was a real need for a high quality, genuinely
& \$ p9 |$ T5 T* _+ M- b; _international journal, that covered the issues that arise
& n& o1 }+ b) L* hwhen renewable energy generation sources are used, and
# h) G, y( _: x7 b( Kalmost invariably this means that they are connected to
* e8 a  w( W1 Z* @/ _  i& |% }electricity systems. As the proportion of electricity
8 X, f+ K$ h8 x/ `1 J& |; e% Rgenerated from renewable sources increases, so the
; a5 T( w  w( |, @; ]- t2 ]7 rchallenges of providing a sustainable, safe, reliable and% I2 i8 a1 j  H
cost effective power system operation become apparent.& I! _( J$ Q, E/ q
Considerable current research is aimed at these, in the5 \4 D* V0 y1 p; y9 J' }
main, technical challenges – much of this is unashamedly$ T$ E/ F8 J& f4 C( ^: E4 T
multi-disciplinary. I hope that IET Renewable Power0 e% i9 K. _/ d
Generation (IET RPG) can capture the best of this research
: S: e7 O8 e$ T. sand disseminate it to the increasingly numerous and active
7 v1 d  y( c$ C* r' p6 Ccommunity of engineers and scientists both researching
8 u$ S. c  B% Q0 I% b; i; Tthe problems and implementing the new knowledge and5 D6 S% d5 B' J8 ?
understanding in a commercial context.
8 J  F6 K4 e# S- A2 F6 K( }5 oI see IET RPG as something that I hope will be valued by' {( h% h/ }2 Y, z0 y# C0 M6 t+ @
the renewable energy community and electricity supply
- k) m( V# W' J  y/ u9 Eindustry together, and provide an important bridge, S2 r6 |& K' S0 R( |
between these two communities. All those involved
" U, q( j( Z, rhave a role to play in ensuring the quality of this journal,
) o4 B& @9 @& p' Mand through this its success and influence on an increasingly
1 h" j7 O& ]7 himportant sector of the economy and one key to a' q6 C$ M: o4 f
sustainable and environmentally sound future.# Y; P& S) D$ \. U2 |
I am very pleased to report that the IET, in agreement( g6 v. |; _1 [# z. M( W2 o
with the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA),
6 T" y/ U6 V7 A2 m% }, |' hwill publish, subject to peer review, the best expanded
& Q* h, r2 z2 Z5 W0 {papers from their series of conferences that are directly. j( [* R$ b, \, b
within the scope of IET RPG. It is hoped that other
7 N! {7 c# v! B# vrenewable energy associations will agree to similar) V/ w( ~  _( o6 r4 S4 ?+ I* o9 o
arrangements as we move forward.# f( u7 x3 T, j! ^7 H
Papers for this inaugural issue have been carefully
* X3 D- P1 e- U, {2 M% [8 cselected to reflect the core values of the journal, and give
* W2 H% h) F* Y/ P" ~; oa feel for its intended coverage. Of course this can only
; t* X; f  l: ]0 zbe partial and I hope to see a wide diversity of challenging
: M  [! [7 D* u6 Q  l5 N- Zresearch and development published in IET RPG in the* l3 U8 I* p( S2 e9 g) ]9 C; `
years to come. I confidently expect the journal to grow in- i2 ^- I5 G* L9 X5 l
size and reputation alongside the sector it seeks to represent.4 @! R* ]7 K3 \! \2 _7 U- z/ S
I’m confident that way we have organised the journal,( U3 J3 H: C5 w) N& t6 ^( D
together with the first-class peer review and rapid timesto-
6 H- `, l  W" N# Udecision that we offer, will encourage many you to4 t* c. U, u4 _0 M/ M8 C
submit your work to IET RPG. Of course I welcome any
: E1 S- p; M$ m$ v. g: D" psuggestions or comments that will help to improve this
