increase in planned renewable energy capacity driven by9 Z2 ^1 q0 ?2 F9 N M A6 d
agreed and binding commitments to CO2 emissions! T/ M% }. G9 W% g) q) [7 s
reduction, and other major economic areas including . X! P, n- L4 V7 c9 p$ qChina and India have recently announced similarly $ ?6 ]: J5 x9 G8 A2 G" Pambitious plans. In North America, the need for sustainable, Q1 @. p0 g6 H& r% J; o" h& G9 M4 K
and clean energy is also being increasingly recognised.! F" y: E F) i" T, ~: m
I was approached by the IET late in 2006 to plan this & g4 V, k) ]0 m1 A3 f# A8 Zexciting new journal, so you will appreciate that we have- E/ ^0 `8 o2 ~& A4 k7 `* M
moved very quickly to publish this first issue. I’m # x1 p# M, j; O. i" a. ^6 `extremely grateful to all the authors and referees that have. l) }% n0 d3 K T5 j1 Y+ C

Photovoltaics, and Solar Cells and Materials, and Solar8 ~4 @+ K' i" ~
Energy has been in print now for over 30 years. However, 4 q8 m4 W& E8 Gwe felt there was a real need for a high quality, genuinely * a7 V: m) {# h3 J( i2 linternational journal, that covered the issues that arise2 o3 \5 J( ]# D
when renewable energy generation sources are used, and , ]2 g# |* v' ^0 `, D; ^- L# G# {almost invariably this means that they are connected to : S. X- v& j0 j/ {" uelectricity systems. As the proportion of electricity) }7 I! J! k& a7 R0 \5 S; a
generated from renewable sources increases, so the * a% V7 b3 a) Hchallenges of providing a sustainable, safe, reliable and * S7 y5 ]7 f+ ~- G5 Gcost effective power system operation become apparent. 8 l, ^6 K% B1 C8 ]9 k# R' MConsiderable current research is aimed at these, in the1 w" x. P. Q* j6 X9 r$ C
main, technical challenges – much of this is unashamedly , A1 b6 k; F. }6 s; P8 I; amulti-disciplinary. I hope that IET Renewable Power' y2 Y5 A' E2 ]* [" O3 q
Generation (IET RPG) can capture the best of this research ; H) S8 i e; _$ G0 f" sand disseminate it to the increasingly numerous and active; n+ S6 m* ~% T* E5 C0 J3 ~& w
community of engineers and scientists both researching4 D% P6 O& F( m
the problems and implementing the new knowledge and! L* X- c6 [- c& k3 X* ]+ n
understanding in a commercial context. ; B M, P7 e+ q% [) ^' f- {' II see IET RPG as something that I hope will be valued by4 t3 M5 m; a9 U7 D. x
the renewable energy community and electricity supply+ f& L0 r9 I& r( j. I: r
industry together, and provide an important bridge) I. [4 k% }% k* F: W/ u" Q

within the scope of IET RPG. It is hoped that other& g* y# T3 h3 ~$ r; j
renewable energy associations will agree to similar. o; ^, n) j' _

selected to reflect the core values of the journal, and give ' L' H9 [! ^. A5 l+ Ga feel for its intended coverage.
