1.0 Introduction Our previous work in this course has focused on analysis of currents during faulted conditions in order to design protective systems necessary to detect and clear faults. Now we turn our attention to the generator response, in terms of speed, during and for a few seconds after a fault. This response is called “electromechanical” because it involves the interaction of rotor dynamics (mechanical) with the dynamics of the generator armature and field winds together with the state of the external network. The basic requirement for generators is that they must operate “in synchronism.” This means that their mechanical speeds must be such so as to produce the same “electrical speed” (frequency). |
