To learn more about the affordable life insurance plans available exclusively to IEEE members in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico, including plan features, costs, eligibility, renewability, limitations, terms of coverage and exclusions, visit http://bmsmail3.ieee.org:80/u/17354/1616012 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~1. Smart Grid: A PrimerFrom developed countries such as Italy, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and the United States to developing ones, like China, India, Poland, and Vietnam, nations are investing in smart grid systems. But what exactly is a smart grid and how does it work? Read on at http://bmsmail3.ieee.org:80/u/17355/16160122. Gordon Day is 2011 IEEE President-ElectIEEE members chose Gordon Day to be 2011 IEEE president-elect. Check out the tally of votes for the 2010 annual election, which was approved at the IEEE Board of Directors' November meeting, at http://bmsmail3.ieee.org:80/u/17356/16160123. Marketplace of Ideas: Smart Grid Speed BumpsProponents of the smart grid point out that because smart meters could allow customers to see how much energy they're using, they could lower their electricity bills by turning off power-hungry appliances or use them at off-peak times. But this good news can come with a rate increase. The Maryland Public Services Commission in June rejected an increase sought by Baltimore Gas and Electric to pay for the installation of smart meters and a new communications network, and other states have expressed similar worries.Would you be willing to help pay for the smart grid in your community? Do the proposed benefits of smart meters outweigh the costs? Weigh in at <mailto:institute@ieee.org>Read responses to September's question, which asked whether plagiarism was a major problem and how it should be punished. Some members said it's a widespread problem and called for stricter reviewing procedures for plagiarists' future publications. Others said the problem is exaggerated because not all plagiarism is done intentionally. New IEEE Offices in AsiaIEEE has opened an office in India's Bangalore central business district to increase its presence in the country, and the IEEE Asia Pacific Operations Center has moved to a another location in Singapore: Fusionopolis, an engineering research complex. For more information, visit http://bmsmail3.ieee.org:80/u/17359/16160125. Help Wanted: Power EngineersThe United Kingdom, Canada, and other countries are experiencing a shortage of power engineers, with the shortage in the United States expected to be the most acute. Read what the IEEE Power & Energy Society is doing to strengthen the power engineering workforce athttp://bmsmail3.ieee.org:80/u/17360/16160126. Students Take On Smart Grid ChallengesAlthough reports say power engineers will soon be retiring in record numbers, many IEEE student members seem ready to take their place and tackle the building of the smart grid. Learn about three of their smart grid projects at http://bmsmail3.ieee.org:80/u/17361/1616012++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++-- sponsor's notice -- NEW -- Free CD features multiphysics simulations projects by 950 of yourpeersAt the recent COMSOL Conferences in Boston, Paris and Bangalore, over 950 COMSOL Multiphysics users presented state-of-the-artachievements in multiphysics simulation.
