In 1954, at a time when much of Europe was busy expanding its electricity supply infrastructure

2 ~( C6 o# _6 R% E9 b  q+ @Sea that would have a lasting effect on long-distance power transmission. Four years earlier, the
: O1 m3 J% W$ D, P- q, DSwedish State Power Board had placed an order for the world’s first commercial high-voltage
direct current (HVDC) transmission link, to be built between the Swedish mainland and the island

Mercury-arc valve based HVDC had come a long way in a short time, but it was a
) l; I6 ^6 {/ o2 W' S1 j2 b* ~technology that still harbored some weaknesses. One was the difficulty in predicting the
behavior of the valves themselves. As they could not always absorb the reverse voltage,
0 K1 ]: l5 a' Q$ {arc-backs occurred. Also, mercury-arc valves require regular maintenance, during which
9 G9 L. ^; j; k1 ]% n" y; dabsolute cleanliness is critical. A valve that avoided these drawbacks was needed.
