6 p+ Z$ D9 g5 z$ y/ u  n, i& LSea that would have a lasting effect on long-distance power transmission. Four years earlier, the
) O! {2 L; @1 o  M! S9 BSwedish State Power Board had placed an order for the world’s first commercial high-voltage
: Y6 j6 q0 b1 [/ k; b5 ~  gdirect current (HVDC) transmission link, to be built between the Swedish mainland and the island

Mercury-arc valve based HVDC had come a long way in a short time, but it was a
technology that still harbored some weaknesses. One was the difficulty in predicting the
# _2 i' K' l6 w  C  W) N4 l; k& Cbehavior of the valves themselves. As they could not always absorb the reverse voltage,
arc-backs occurred. Also, mercury-arc valves require regular maintenance, during which
) e9 N7 G. m" ?! b1 G5 v1 r- yabsolute cleanliness is critical. A valve that avoided these drawbacks was needed.
