50 years HVDC ABB – from pioneer to world leader

In 1954, at a time when much of Europe was busy expanding its electricity supply infrastructure
to keep pace with surging demand, an event was quietly taking place on the shores of the Baltic
; l* V9 Q$ t* z2 |Sea that would have a lasting effect on long-distance power transmission. Four years earlier, the
6 I' A# j1 J" M+ I" I4 y; [+ H0 f* hSwedish State Power Board had placed an order for the world’s first commercial high-voltage
/ ]  ]" ~, z1 F& w( v- mdirect current (HVDC) transmission link, to be built between the Swedish mainland and the island

Mercury-arc valve based HVDC had come a long way in a short time, but it was a
6 `- ^5 o+ |' j: o! y' c/ F7 \, M, Jtechnology that still harbored some weaknesses. One was the difficulty in predicting the
behavior of the valves themselves. As they could not always absorb the reverse voltage,
" b% T9 M6 ~$ {: \arc-backs occurred. Also, mercury-arc valves require regular maintenance, during which
: o! f1 A  o4 ^/ A  cabsolute cleanliness is critical. A valve that avoided these drawbacks was needed.
