Learning objectives:
A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to:
determine wind turbine site characteristics
determine wind turbine power curve
determine structural properties e.g. eigenfrequencies, mean loads and fatigue life consumption
assess impact of wind turbine on power grid
address environmental problems e.g. noise emission
select proper sensors based on type, accuracy, calibration and installation requirements
describe requirements to sensor field calibration and field control
design and program a data acquisition system from sensor to data management
identify relevant standards
Content:
Introduction to theory and methods for experimental determination of wind characteristics, wind turbine power performance and mechanical loads together with assessment of electric power quality and noise emission.
Presentation of IEC-standards for wind turbine testing.
Description of instrumentation involved in the testing, ranging from sensors, data acquisition, database management and data analysis.
Discussion of sensors, their principles, accuracy and calibration with special attention given to the anemometer, the strain gauge and voltage/current measurement transformers.
Learning how to design and implement a data acquisition system based on LabView.
The lectures are combined with exercises founded in real wind turbine measurements, calibration of sensors in the laboratory and recording of real-time data from a 500 kW wind turbine sited at Risø. The wind turbine is operational and equipped with a complete measurement system, which is available from DTU over the Internet, see www.winddata.com/nordtank/.
An excursion to the wind turbine site is planned.
Part of the lectures are given by researchers from Risø National Laboratory.
