components such as inductors and transformers constitute together with the

magnetic parts is still often done by trial and error. This can be explained by
- u' ^! a; C# V4 ka (too) long working-in time for designing inductors and transformers. The" M" e2 P: e- u Z# n
design has many aspects, such as the magnetic core and winding, eddy currents,8 y3 ^+ S8 ] _/ K( l; s- L, M+ G
insulation, thermal design, parasitic effects, and measurements. A lot of6 t/ t2 Z4 Q% m5 `- ^1 I4 J, ?* c$ {
literature exists concerning those subjects, but the information is spread over. n: r, B I0 N/ w: @ ~, [' }. u
many articles and methods. This book is mainly focused on classical methods
/ X- g/ ?# c- u$ {4 Zand uses numerical tools such as finite element methods in the background.
0 ~, ?1 |% m1 I( X! O) ZWe try to give some overview of the basics and technological aspects of the
; K1 O2 p, a: u7 t/ Xdesign. In the different chapters we also describe analytical approximations
" `4 }5 @4 N' |$ F) ubased on known analytical solutions, but tuned by finite elements. In most6 X) f& Z& R! l" ~3 U* ]
of the cases, a sufficient accuracy can be obtained and the results are obtained
5 X/ R' a. n) Z5 q' Y3 Balmost instantaneously, even for graphics using many calculation points. A
2 ]1 ^/ h9 r- ]7 ^% t. S' P+ zfast approximation method is useful as a first step in the design stage, whereas: [3 H2 D& I; Q8 r% M3 E0 f
numerical tools such as finite elements are good in analysis. Specific books! j# ]# Z; Q0 Q

in Chapter 1.

Simple rules
, @; R' z7 G7 ?8 P) J( C) o, U _of thumb such as that “the eddy copper current losses are always negligible6 m4 r9 i% g! p" A! Z
when the diameter of the wire is smaller than the penetration depth” are not
. z% S# P$ Q3 ~ Ktrue. However, it is clear that the main cause of the eddy current losses is
/ }7 C' X* }6 B& Z! w7 y5 E8 ycaused by the presence of high frequency transverse magnetic field components.
; m% n+ P, }7 b4 s8 g& Z0 wThis is the base of the fast design method in Chapter 2. The method
: Z$ ^% S T1 h+ N: z* u4 `" Cis further improved using some corrections for other effects and is embedded3 K: [/ Z& j9 B. X& S
in a decision flow chart of a design procedure. More insight and better4 t8 p) E$ [2 i t" H. y) r
accuracy is provided in the other chapters. We invite the readers to let them

The chapters in the book are organized in a quite independent way with# k5 J4 p8 P$ A& P

end provide information that is not linked to a specific chapter and can be
