Chiang has no math degree. However, his math is way stronger than those math-power system professors.
I think Ian and Chiang are the best in the math among the power professors, while Chiang is much
stronger than Ian in power.

There a lots who are 电力系统名人是学数学出生的.
Among them there is one who I believe made important contribution to the China power community - Prof. Wu Zhong-Xi. She co-authored the stability program of China EPRI and this program is used by half of the utility in China. No very fancy math in it, but it is the real contribution in power engineering.
There is another who succeeded in the opposite direction. Prof. Feng Kang, who graduated from EE former Central University then become a great mathematician. I think he is the only one in the opposite direction, but is really successful.
There is huge gap between a 名人 and a top expert, even a really expert...
数学永远是最犀利的工具

Yes it is. However, you have to be very careful. Most of math produced power systems papers are garbage. You have to understand the physical system then apply the proper math on it. Without understanding the physical world before applying a math methods result garbage papers, waste time, life and ink.
