From view point of education, Ph.D. is the last and highest level of training on scientific research. The Ph.D. graduate should be systematical educated so that they can carry on high end work in their career, such as being university professor or doing advance research independently. As I understand the Ph.D. graduates should be able to work INDEPENDENTLY in the relevant researching area.

From the view point of Ph.D. student/perspective Ph.D. student, I would think you have to understand Ph.D. education is a long term investment. If you get this training, it must be useful in future. However, it might be not such effective in short term. In the mean time, I would suggest, if you have interests in research work, then do it, other wise, you can go other way. It would be very boring in the long Ph.D. years, if you are not interesting in the research work.

So, do what you enjoy...
