The Covid-19 pandemic has created an unprecedented global emergency

and well-being of their citizens. Countries are in lockdown, and financial and
* j6 B0 @6 [* v7 peconomic safeguards are being erected to prevent even greater turmoil. Looking
% w; Z- h& L0 B$ w) |( @$ ]% V1 m8 \* pfurther forwards, the world faces an enormous task getting people back to work
and reigniting the engines of economic growth.
. k8 p$ R/ Z4 _8 B4 l; \6 \- aAround the world, leaders are getting ready now, drawing up massive
economic stimulus packages. Some of these plans will provide short-term boosts,
2 `0 I' i& `/ \# Rothers will shape infrastructure for decades to come. We believe that by making
% {- G0 j  G) d2 R+ {clean energy an integral part of their plans, governments can deliver jobs and
+ p0 a4 Y# P2 O0 Z4 t0 h" V$ Y; aeconomic growth while also ensuring that their energy systems are modernised,
more resilient and less polluting.
Global confinement has halted travel and transport, causing a severe shock
6 u; `$ z1 k" O7 G+ ]2 sto energy systems. As a result, it is likely that global carbon dioxide emissions
will decline this year. But that will not be anything to celebrate. What matters is
7 f) _( f# t% U) g- tputting emissions into structural decline. For that, we will need clean energy to
play a central role in recovery efforts. This is an inter-generational opportunity,
. ^  v; J! Q+ @* ?9 m0 Wwhere smart economic planning can enable us to put the world on track to meet
our climate commitments, including the Paris Agreement. We need to make the
. h$ z! e9 n4 m- T, q& akey pillars of energy transitions - such as energy efficiency, renewables and
1 o5 [. O, G' V# ~9 f4 h8 @) lbattery storage - top priorities for creating jobs, improving critical infrastructure
and driving innovation.
